Why C:AUTO
More and more accidents in urban areas happen because of excessive speed. In particular, an estimated 10 to 15% of all road crashes and 30% of fatal injury crashes are the direct result of excessive or inappropriate speed1.
Drivers tend to disregard the given speed limits, sometimes for a simple lack of awareness of their actual speed or out of boredom2. In particular, in urban areas, 35% to 75% of Europeans does not observe the speed limit1.
Such behavior must be contrasted so to safeguard lives and in general the safety of urban environments, as we transition towards increasingly smart and sustainable cities, as targeted by the United Nation in Goal 11, namely “Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable”.
In particular, C:AUTO is a valid response to two specific targets of the United Nations:
Goal 11.2 “By 2030, provide access to safe, affordable, accessible and sustainable transport systems for all, improving road safety, notably by expanding public transport, with special attention to the needs of those in vulnerable situations, women, children, persons with disabilities and older persons”
Goal 3.6 “By 2020, halve the number of global deaths and injuries from road traffic accidents”
12020 Report of the European Road Safety Observatory & 2Elvik et al. (2004)
What is C:AUTO?
We envision an autonomous and electric vehicle driving at the speed limit in urban areas.
In particular C:AUTO would:
Adapt its speed based on traffic, weather conditions, school areas, road works, accidents, etc.
Automatically positions itself on roads where there is a higher chance of vehicles speeding, based on current and historical conditions, and where there is a higher chance of accidents happening. For example, it would drive around school areas at peak times, and therefore when many children cross the street and cars should limit their speed.
Automatically lowers its speed in case of weather conditions that reduce visibility or create potentially dangerous situations.
Potentially embed a system to report and sanction vehicles that surpass the speed limit and additional functions to monitor illegal parking, divert traffic in case of emergencies, or provide video registrations for safety reasons.
What have we done?
After having refined our idea, we continued with an assessment of the market conditions. In particular, we met with potential suppliers to understand the feasibility of the product and the associated costs.
We were also in contact with local administrations to better understand the problem and create a solution more aligned with their needs.
Finally, together with a specialized consulting agency, we drafted a patent application to protect our idea (Utility Model), in particular by identifying the protectable components of our business model and the specific classes of protection.
Where are we?
While our vision is set, our market tests proved that the current legal and technological frameworks do not allow us to create and operate C:AUTO at a cost that would justify its use. In the future, development in autonomous driving laws and technology may turn C:AUTO into an economic, smart, and efficient way of preventing and reducing urban road accidents.
